How the sole is attached is the decision that most changes how a shoe feels, what it costs and how long it lasts. It is also the one buyers most often leave to the factory, which is a shame, because the trade-offs are easy to understand once they are laid out.

Cemented

The lasted upper is roughed, primed and bonded to the sole under pressure. It is the lightest and most flexible of the three, it suits almost any silhouette, and it dominates fashion footwear for good reason. A cemented shoe is generally not resoleable, and the bond is only as good as the surface preparation, which is why the roughing station is watched as closely as it is.

Stitched

A stitched construction adds a mechanical joint to the chemical one, and in the traditional welted form it allows the shoe to be resoled more than once. It costs more in labour and machine time, it asks for heavier materials, and it rewards buyers whose customers keep shoes for years rather than seasons.

Cost per pair and cost per year are different questions, and construction is where they diverge.

Injected

The sole is moulded directly onto the lasted upper, so bond and sole are formed in one operation. It is efficient at volume, consistent, and hard to beat on waterproofing — but the mould is the design, so every silhouette change is tooling, and small orders carry that cost badly.
